Our Housing for Health is an ongoing program, which is pro-active in that Council’s indigenous housing maintenance team surveys every house in the community on a regular basis and undertakes repairs and maintenance on the house at the same time. The surveys consist of a set listing of questions covering electrical, plumbing, and structural safety issues together with similar questions on healthy living practices such as waste disposal, washing and food hygiene. Any areas in the survey which fail (for example, the toilet or the shower doesn’t work) are then repaired immediately, or in the case of major work, a Council tradesman is sent in to repair the item, usually the same day.

As such, with the Housing for Health program, Council provides a maintenance service which establishes a solid base for better living conditions and improved primary health care in the community.

The Housing for Health Program has also generated a considerable housing data base, which has been used to clearly demonstrate the benefits of the program to Councillors and community members alike. The data base allows Council to efficiently plan future housing and to identify housing renovation programs. This is an important tool for use in the development of the Maningrida community.
